Notes from Training Camp: Day one

I had a source on the ground and of course Darin Gantt via Twitter who gave me some good information today. Just a short post, but I figured I would fill everyone in:

Done and done… Clausen signs on the bottom line

Fantastic news Panthers’ fans as 2nd round pick Jimmy Clausen signed a 4 year, $6.5 million contract with a little over $2.5 million guaranteed. The majority of Clausen’s contract will come in performance escalators, and bonuses for playing time. This was the perfect way to structure his contract to ensure fairness to both Jimmy Clausen and the Carolina Panthers.

This has been a truly great offseason for the Panthers’ front office who deserve a great deal of kudos for getting the rookies signed and in camp faster than ever before. Now the hard work comes, the rubber hits the road and I run out of training camp related cliches.

How much can we really expect from Brandon LaFell and Armanti Edwards in 2010?

As NFL fans around the country slowly kick the dust off their boots and venture out of the desert which is offseason training camps around the country are starting, or have just started. With Panthers’ camp starting on Thursday there are numerous questions surrounding the team that we have discussed ad nauseum we’re reaching the point where the rubber hits to road and players need to go out there and perform.

Nowhere is this more prevalent that with the revamped wide receiver position. As it stands there is no way to know who will be standing opposite Steve Smith come week one of the regular season. The organization was well aware of their impending crisis at the WR position after selecting three wide receivers in the 2010 draft. Out of these three players both Brandon LaFell and Armanti Edwards will be looked at to be the future of the Panthers’ passing attack. Without looking into the far future, let’s go back one year to look at 2nd and 3rd round receivers from the 2009 draft and see if there’s any way to predict how much LaFell and Edwards can add to the Panthers’ 2010 season.

THIS IS SPARTA….nburg

Okay, so maybe Spartanburg, SC doesn’t have a lot in common with the Sparta of history and mythology, but it doesn’t take a genius to see the parallels between the movie and story of ‘300′ and the 2010 Carolina Panthers.

And then there was one… Brandon LaFell signs 3 year deal

The only rookie yet to sign his contract is quarterback Jimmy Clausen as today 3rd round WR Brandon LaFell inked a 3 year deal with a signing bonus of approximately $800,000.

My thoughts on T.O for the Carolina Panthers

There seems to be this obsession that it’s still 1999 among approximately 10% of every fan base. In Carolina we have two examples of this as people are advocating for Allen Iverson to become a Charlotte Bobcat, and others believing that the answer at the WR position is Terrell Owens.

Is it just me or are we experiencing deja vu? Just substitute Owens, Terrell or Johnson, Keyshawn and you have the exact same situation the Panthers found themselves in three years ago. The Panthers were in the transitory period after Muhsin Muhammad where the organization were desperately looking for an answer to put across from Steve Smith while rookies and unproven players grew into the NFL. Fast forward to 2010 and we have Muhammad retiring from the Panthers, and a bunch of rookies looking to find their role. But, is Terrell Owens the right answer for the Carolina Panthers?

The Cult of Youth

‘The Cult of Youth’ is a term I threw around a lot during the period characterized as the ‘under 30 purge’. It refers to the almost obsessive nature of the Carolina Panthers’ desire to not only rebuild, but to do so young and cheap. If done in a calculated way it allows a franchise to put themselves in a great position for years to come. The most successful recent occasion where this ‘Cult of Youth’ techinque worked so well was in Pittsburgh, where a Steelers team post Tommy Maddox was built being young.

The next step in this process is to cut and/or trade players before the chance they can break down. This is another situation where there is a calculated risk as the odds are sometimes these trades and cuts will work, and other times they will fail.  Look at the way the New England Patriots are so willing to move loved players and get more prospects. I believe this is what the Carolina Panthers are trying to do.

It feels a lot like 2003

I’m a big proponent of the notion that ‘respect is earned, not given’ but at the same time I also think credit should be given when it’s due. Across the national landscape right now the Carolina Panthers are being regarded as one of the worst teams in the NFL, and I don’t believe it’s fair.

At the forefront of this initiative  is Yahoo Sport’s Jason Cole who ranked the Panthers as having the worst defensive line in the NFL, one of the worst QB corps in the NFL and a middle of the road offensive line.

And then there were two… Panthers sign Armanti Edwards.

Good news Panther fans, another free agent has been signed! Armanti Edwards will be in camp ready to train and the organization are hoping that he can be ready to be the slot receiver for the 2010 season.

The only players left to sign are 3rd round WR Brandon LaFell and 2nd round QB Jimmy Clausen. Thankfully though, out of these three players Armanti Edwards was the most important player to get in camp, as he has the most work to do.

Why Panthers’ fans don’t need to draw a line in the sand

Do you like the foot of the bed tucked in, or hanging out?

Ketchup, or mustard?

Edward, or Jacob? (I promise, that is the first and last Twilight reference you’ll see here)

Boxer, or briefs?

Life is full or decisions, and we live in an assertive society. Society wants us to have a firm answer in hand and stand by our belief resolute and steadfast. Lately though I’ve seen this trend spread through the Carolina Panthers fanbase, and I don’t like it. I’m here to tell you that you don’t need to draw a line in the sand.
